As second-generation owners of John S. Mcmanus, Inc., a general contracting company based in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania, brothers John and Mike McManus lead their company with the same core values of hard work that were instilled in them by their father.
With expertise in hospital projects across the region, John McManus recalls the company’s first project with Doylestown Hospital nearly thirty years ago. “Architects we worked with recommended that we be added to the bidder list for the Medical Surgical unit and the fourth floor Rehab projects. We submitted the most competitive bid and won the project,” says John. “The rest is history!” More recently, the McManus company led the construction of the Clark Center for Breast Imaging and the Morel Family Foundation Center for Prenatal Care and now oversees the rebuilding of Children’s Village early childhood education center on the hospital campus.
Working in close partnership with Doylestown Hospital medical staff, Associates, and administrators over the years gave the McManus brothers opportunities to observe all facets of hospital operations. This experience also prompted their earliest philanthropic gifts to Doylestown Health.
John and Mike are proud to be part of a uniquely large family. “Coming from a family of 14 we were brought up to work hard and care for our fellow man,” says John. The extended McManus family counts John and Mike’s siblings as well as 44 grandchildren and more than 30 great-grandchildren.
Their late sister, Eileen McManus, was a visiting nurse at Doylestown Hospital for 18 years, caring for patients in and around the community and near where she made her home in Upper Black Eddy. Eileen was affectionately known to her family by the nickname “Beaner.” “I used to meet her in the Doylestown Hospital cafeteria for lunch when I was onsite,” says Mike. “By coincidence I worked on a project for Doylestown Hospital with a designer and she told me Eileen had cared for her mom. She shared how loving and caring Beaner was, even when she was losing strength due to her illness.” Sadly, Eileen succumbed to cancer in 2017. “I still feel like her spirit is a part of the loving care at the hospital,” says Mike.
Gifts from John S. McManus, Inc. have supported philanthropic initiatives at Doylestown Health for decades, including title sponsorships of the annual golf outing and gifts for the hospital’s global humanitarian relief efforts. They also named a pediatric procedure room in the Surgical Suite area in loving memory of Eileen.
“John and Mike have been outstanding and generous partners,” says John Mitchell, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “They have become part of the Doylestown Health family and are deeply invested—personally and professionally—in our success as an organization. They ensure that our projects meet the highest standards. We are lucky to work side-by-side with them and their team to realize our vision for the future.”
Laura Wortman, Vice President and Chief Advancement Officer, states, “gifts from corporations and businesses in our community and beyond support us as we approach our second century of award-winning care. John and Mike have been incredibly generous, and we are stronger because of their partnership over the years.”
“It was easy for us to want to team up with the hospital since their values closely align with ours,” says John. For Mike, a key distinction of Doylestown Hospital is that it is “like a loving family that wraps its arms around all patients who walk through the doors.”
