Jack McCaughan’s support of Doylestown Health spans nearly three decades. A chemical engineer by trade, Jack and his family relocated to Doylestown from Montreal, Canada. His first introduction to Doylestown Health was “when Herman Silverman, the founder of Friends of the Heart Institute, gave me a call. I was CEO of Betz Labs at the time and Herman was reaching out to business leaders to get them engaged. The rest is history,” he laughs.
It didn’t take long for Jack, his wife Carol and their family to get involved in the Doylestown Health community. As a family they entrusted Doylestown Hospital with their care, including the inevitable emergencies. “Like many young families, each of our three kids had a visit to the Doylestown Hospital Emergency Department. I was always impressed with the care,” Jack notes. That confidence grew after his own personal experience as a patient in the early 1990s. Jack recalls vividly, “I thought I was in good health and I had just played a great game of tennis and then I had a heart attack. It was a shock, and I came to appreciate just how impressive the care is at Doylestown Hospital. People cared about you at every level of the organization.”
Over the years, Jack has helped to advance the mission of the hospital. He was vice-chair of the campaign for the new Emergency Department, served as one of the founding members of Friends of the Heart Institute, and currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Ann Silverman Community Health Clinic. He is also a member of Doylestown Health’s Ambassadors Circle. Through these endeavors, he gained an even deeper appreciation for “the incredible expert care at Doylestown Hospital and what it means to our community.”
As Jack and Carol developed plans for retirement, they chose to create a Charitable Remainder Trust as a way to create income, save taxes and give back to Doylestown Health. “We get a regular income distribution and Doylestown Health will benefit as well. We are so fortunate to have fantastic healthcare and heart care in our community. I consider this to be a win-win for us and for an organization that means a great deal to me and my family.” He added, “more people should take advantage of this type of opportunity.”
