Whether through annual scholarships which provide nurses an opportunity to seek continuing education or higher degrees, or special awards to recognize leaders in the field, Doylestown Heath is committed to supporting our nurses and the vital role they play in the overall health of our community.

NURSING AWARDS
Spirit of Nursing Award
This award, established by an anonymous donor, aims to identify an exceptional nurse professional who not only exemplifies clinical excellence but also personifies the very essence of human caring by representing the caritas of the nursing identity. The award is intended to recognize nurses and the critically important work of nursing, and facilitate a sense of pride through achievement. The award provides much needed public recognition for the significant and ongoing contribution made by nurses. This is the highest honor presented annually to a nurse and significantly recognizes the importance of the spirit of compassionate care. The winner is awarded the prestigious Munsey Medal.
Award Criteria includes:
- Spirit of Caring – Possesses a natural tendency to truly care about their patients.
- Respect – Demonstrates respect and dignity to those around them, including co-workers, patients and visitors. Creates and fosters human connection.
- Holistic Care – Contributes to producing a safe, healing and positive environment for patients, families and other professional staff. Demonstrates caring for the whole patient, including their mind, body and spirit.
- Ethical Countenance – Upholds ethical countenance to analyze rightness, fairness and equity in daily activities of meeting patients’ needs. Believes in the same opportunity for wellness and healing for all patients, regardless of circumstance or background.
- Love for Profession – Exhibits a pride for the profession of nursing and in their daily job.
- Clinical Competence and Professional Growth – Recognized as clinically expert in their area and pursues additional learning opportunities.
Eleanor Wilson Excellence in Nursing Award
The Doylestown Hospital and Doylestown Health Foundation Boards of Trustees established the Eleanor Wilson Excellence in Nursing Award, in honor of retired Chief Operating Officer and former Chief Nursing Officer, Eleanor Wilson. This award recognizes a nurse who demonstrates and reflects qualities reminiscent of Eleanor Wilson.
Award Criteria includes:
- Excellent clinical nursing skills as evidenced by feedback from patients, peers and colleagues
- Promote teamwork and collegial working relationships
- Contribute to the patient experience of high quality nursing care, evidenced by successful outcomes
- Able to lead, influence, and improve outcomes of patient care
- Recognized across the organization as a patient safety advocate
Emerging Nursing Excellence
The Emerging Nurse Excellence Award was established for an emerging nurse within the first two years of their career who demonstrates the potential to impact the nursing profession significantly, practices exemplary professional ethics, advocates on behalf of the profession and in the best interest of patients, and is committed to quality and compassion when delivering care.
Award Criteria includes:
- Must be within first two years of his/her nursing career
- Demonstrate potential to significantly impact the nursing profession
- Exemplary professional practice
- Advocate on behalf of the nursing profession and in the best interest of patients
- Demonstrate commitment to quality and compassion in delivering care
Patti Stover Compassion in Nursing
The Patti Stover Compassion in Nursing Award recognizes a nurse who demonstrates performance beyond expectations and delivers care with empathy, compassion, and respect. This nurse exhibits a patient-first approach to care delivery and is an effective professional who communicates kindly with peers, patients, and their loved ones.
Award Criteria includes:
- Demonstrate nursing performance that goes beyond expectations
- Deliver care with empathy, compassion and respect
- Exhibit a patient-first approach to care delivery
- Effective professional and kind communication with peers, patients, and their loved ones
Preceptor of the Year Award
Recognizes an outstanding and exemplary nurse who demonstrates an enthusiasm for the preceptor role. The recipient is committed to teaching, learning and leading in the clinical environment and inspiring the next generation of nurses.
Award Criteria includes:
- Demonstrate clinical expertise
- Foster learning through constructive feedback and hands-on mentorship
- Serve as a positive role model
- Demonstrate commitment to professional growth
- Inspire continued learning and clinical excellence by leading by example
NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS
Nursing Scholarship Fund
Doylestown Health’s Nursing Scholarship Fund is the primary fund for awarding scholarships. This general fund has supported hundreds of nurses over the years seeking higher levels of education and training. Scholarships distributed from this fund are called “Woodall Scholarships” in honor of Marvin and Dee Ann Woodall for their tremendous support of the Nursing Scholarship Program. Contributions from the Woodall Family helped to launch the program decades ago, and the family has supported its sustained growth ever since.
Seamus Cummins Memorial Scholarship Fund
Named in memory of former night administrative coordinator, Seamus Cummins. Seamus passed away in 2015 and was a beloved member of the Doylestown Hospital family.
Fickes Memorial Scholarship Fund
Named in memory of Gene Fickes, who passed away in 2011. Gene was a local businessman, philanthropist, and supporter of Doylestown Hospital.
Lynda W. Knopf and Ed R. Knopf Memorial Scholarship Fund
Named in memory of Lynda Knopf, who was a former nurse at Princeton Hospital. The family extended the tribute to include their father, Dr. Ed Knopf, former Chief Medical Officer at Doylestown Hospital.
