Local philanthropist inspired to join more than 6,000 donors in supporting ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health.
DOYLESTOWN, PA – Richard and Donna Shindell of Furlong, Pennsylvania, have made a generous visionary gift to Doylestown Health in the form of a $1 million pledge. As first-time donors to the health system, the Shindells join nearly 6,000 like-minded community members and business leaders in the region who support ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health and the health system’s ambitious plans for the future.
“We’re so happy and fortunate to be able to make this contribution,” said Richard Shindell. “This campaign is a golden opportunity for everybody in this community to have a meaningful role in fostering the growth of the hospital.”
The Shindells’ gift comes just as Doylestown Health announced the increase of the campaign goal from $75 to $100 million by 2023.
“We are so pleased to welcome Richard and Donna Shindell to our family of donors,” said Jim Brexler, President and Chief Executive Officer, Doylestown Health, “and so proud that the One Vision campaign inspired and attracted their generosity. Their joining with us at this time is a hallmark of the many ways this campaign is still making an impact in our community, and inspiring enthusiasm in more people who connect with and believe in our mission. Thanks to the Shindells and so many others, Doylestown Health can continue to grow, improve, and lead the region in healthcare for generations to come.”
A new concourse planned for construction on the hospital’s first floor—designed to improve patient access and streamline patient discharge—will be named in recognition of their generosity. The Shindell Concourse will provide an enclosed first-floor connection between Doylestown Hospital and the Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pavilion, opened a year ago in January 2020.
Shindell says it was important to him and his wife to attach their name to a gift in the hopes that it will encourage others to give what they can. “I’m proud to have our name on that space,” he said. “I want people to see that we care about our community. We want our name displayed with the good works that Doylestown Health represents.”
The Shindells have been part of the greater Doylestown community for nearly two decades, having settled in Furlong after living in Baltimore where they met. Donna Shindell had lived in Bucks County before then, and Richard’s family were Pennsylvania natives going back centuries. Shindell is retired and most recently held the position of vice president with T. Rowe Price of Baltimore. He and his wife place great importance on philanthropy and have given to other organizations over the years, but this is their first gift to Doylestown Health.
“We gravitate toward helping medical initiatives,” said Shindell of his philanthropic interests. “We heard about the One Vision campaign last year and knew we wanted to make a contribution to this vital community organization before the end of 2020. We’re fortunate to have Doylestown Health and the opportunity to support this wonderful campaign.”
This year, Doylestown Health announced that the One Vision campaign goal would increase from $75 to $100 million after reaching the $70 million milestone at the end of 2020, thanks to remarkable community support since the launch of the quiet phase in 2016. To date, the campaign has fostered transformational growth at Doylestown Hospital and Pine Run Retirement Community, with the opening of the Woodall Center for Heart and Vascular Care, the Clark Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, and the Pine Run Community Center. Construction is currently underway on renovating and expanding the Doylestown Hospital surgical suites.
Newly announced campaign priorities include the relocation and expansion of the Women’s Diagnostic Center in Doylestown Hospital, now reopened as the Clark Center for Breast Imaging, rebuilding Children’s Village following damage from the tornado last August, a conference suite and learning center for community and medical staff education in the hospital, finalizing plans to transition Doylestown Hospital to an all-private bed facility in the future, and growing the health system’s endowment for a source of permanent future funding.
“We’re immensely proud and grateful for the early and ongoing support of our community of donors,” says Laura Wortman, Vice President and Chief Development Officer, Doylestown Health. “New partnerships with donors like the Shindells underscore the continued relevance and vitality of the One Vision campaign, and fortify our intention to accelerate our ambitious goals in this exciting new chapter.”
